Description

Thyroid peroxidase (TPO) is a glycosylated hemoprotein located on the apical membrane of thyroid follicular cells, playing a pivotal role in thyroid hormone synthesis. TPO antibodies are autoantibodies generated by the immune system during thyroid hormone synthesis. These antibodies can mediate cytotoxic effects, resulting in thyroid tissue destruction, and are considered hallmark markers of autoimmune thyroid diseases.
