Description

Thrombomodulin (TM) is a type-I transmembrane protein predominantly expressed on endothelial cells, where it plays crucial roles in various biological processes. Different forms of circulating TM are also present in biofluids, including blood and urine. Soluble TM (sTM), which consists of several domains of TM, represents the major circulating form. It is generated through enzymatic or chemical cleavage of the intact protein under diverse conditions. Under normal physiological conditions, sTM is present in low concentrations (<10 ng/mL) in the blood. However, its levels are elevated in several pathological conditions associated with endothelial dysfunction, such as cardiovascular diseases, inflammatory disorders, infections, and metabolic diseases. Consequently, sTM levels have been investigated as a potential biomarker for monitoring disease progression.
