Description

Thrombomodulin (TM) is a single-chain glycoprotein synthesized by both megakaryocytes and endothelial cells. It is extensively distributed on the surface of vascular endothelial cells and is also present in placental trophoblast cells, platelets, megakaryocytes, monocytes, neutrophils, synovial cells, keratinocytes, meningeal cells, smooth muscle cells, and tumor cells. TM functions as a cofactor for activated protein C (APC). Upon binding to thrombin, TM diminishes thrombin's coagulation activity while simultaneously enhancing its capacity to activate protein C. Activated protein C exhibits potent anticoagulant properties, thereby positioning TM as a critical vascular anticoagulant factor that transforms thrombin from a procoagulant to an anticoagulant state.
