Description

Thrombin is a critical protease that plays a central role in the blood coagulation process and clot formation. It is an active enzyme derived from prothrombin (coagulation factor II) through cleavage at the thrombin cleavage site. Thrombin catalyzes the conversion of fibrinogen into fibrin and activates plasma prothrombin to generate additional thrombin, thereby initiating thrombus formation and the clotting cascade. While thrombin is essential for normal clotting mechanisms, dysregulation of its activity—whether excessive or insufficient—can result in bleeding disorders or thrombotic conditions.
