Description

Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) is a novel lipid transport protein (also known as lipocalin) discovered by Kjeldsen et al. in 1993 during their research on the 92 kDa gelatinase, MMP-9, in neutrophils. With a molecular weight of 25 kDa, NGAL consists of 198 amino acids, the first 20 of which form a signal peptide. It is expressed in neutrophils and epithelial cells of various tissues and organs, including renal tubules. Under normal conditions, NGAL is present at low levels in urine and blood. However, during kidney injury, NGAL expression is significantly upregulated and secreted into body fluids. As a result, NGAL is recognized as a new biochemical marker for early renal injury. Compared to creatinine (Cr) detection, NGAL measurement is more specific in assessing the severity of acute kidney injury (AKI), and its sensitivity demonstrates a statistically significant difference (P<0.001).
