Description

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) is a glycoprotein hormone consisting of α and β subunits. The α subunit is common to pituitary hormones and shares a similar composition and structure with the α subunits of human pituitary LH, FSH, and TSH, potentially leading to cross-reactivity. In contrast, the β subunit is relatively specific and serves as an accurate indicator of HCG levels in blood and urine. HCG is primarily produced by trophoblastic cells. During normal pregnancy, it binds to LH receptors, promoting the development of the corpus luteum and thereby sustaining pregnancy. In clinical practice, the interaction between its α subunit and LH is leveraged for ovulation induction therapy, while the specificity of the β subunit is utilized for disease diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment evaluation.
