Description

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) is a glycoprotein hormone consisting of α and β subunits. The α subunit is common to pituitary hormones and exhibits a similar composition and structure to the α subunits of human pituitary LH, FSH, and TSH, which may result in potential cross-reactivity. In contrast, the β subunit is relatively specific and serves as an accurate indicator of HCG levels in blood and urine. HCG is primarily synthesized by trophoblastic cells. During normal pregnancy, it binds to LH receptors, stimulating the development of the corpus luteum and thereby supporting pregnancy maintenance. In clinical practice, the interaction between its α subunit and LH is leveraged for ovulation induction therapy, while the specificity of the β subunit is utilized for disease diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment evaluation.
