Description

D-dimer is a degradation product of cross-linked fibrin, generated through the action of fibrinolytic enzymes following the formation of cross-linked fibrin from human plasma fibrinogen. This process is mediated by the combined activity of thrombin, Factor XIIIa, and calcium ions. As a hallmark product of in vivo cross-linked fibrin hydrolysis, elevated levels of D-dimer indicate increased fibrin formation and degradation, often associated with hypercoagulable states. Consequently, D-dimer serves as a critical biomarker for diagnosing and monitoring conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Its measurement is essential in clinical settings to assess thrombotic activity and guide therapeutic decisions.
