Description

D-dimer, a specific degradation product of cross-linked fibrin, is generated through the combined action of thrombin, Factor XIII, and calcium ions on fibrinogen in human plasma, followed by degradation by plasmin. As a hallmark product of in vivo cross-linked fibrin hydrolysis, elevated levels of D-dimer reflect increased fibrin formation and degradation, signaling active thrombotic and fibrinolytic processes in the body. D-dimer is a crucial biomarker for diagnosing and monitoring conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Its high sensitivity and strong negative predictive value make it a valuable tool in clinical practice, aiding in the exclusion of thrombotic events and guiding diagnostic and therapeutic decisions.
