Description

Cystatin C (CysC) is a cysteine protease inhibitor, also referred to as gamma-microprotein or gamma-postglobulin. It is a low-molecular-weight, alkaline, non-glycosylated protein that is produced at a constant rate by all nucleated cells in the body. Circulating cystatin C is exclusively cleared by glomerular filtration, making it an endogenous marker that accurately reflects changes in the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). After filtration, it is reabsorbed in the proximal tubule, where it is completely metabolized and does not re-enter the bloodstream. Consequently, its blood concentration is solely determined by glomerular filtration and is unaffected by external factors such as sex, age, or diet. This makes cystatin C an ideal endogenous marker for assessing changes in GFR.
