Description

Cystatin C (CysC) is a low-molecular-weight (13.3 kDa) non-glycosylated protein that belongs to the cystatin protease inhibitor family. Produced at a constant rate by all nucleated cells, CysC is freely filtered through the glomerular membrane in the kidneys. It is subsequently reabsorbed and fully catabolized by the proximal renal tubules, without re-entering the bloodstream. As a result, CysC serves as an ideal marker for assessing glomerular filtration rate (GFR).
