Description

Angelicin, a furocoumarin, is a naturally occurring tricyclic aromatic compound. Structurally related to psoralens, it is reported to possess anti-cancer, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory activities.

In Vitro Study

In human SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells, angelicin increases cellular cytotoxicity in a dose- and time-dependent manner, with an IC50 of 49.56 μM at 48 hours of incubation. Angelicin dose-dependently downregulates the expression of anti-apoptotic proteins, including Bcl-2, Bcl-xL, and Mcl-1. Angelicin-induced apoptosis is primarily mediated through the intrinsic caspase-mediated pathway. Additionally, angelicin efficiently inhibits 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced lytic replication of human gammaherpesviruses in both EBV- and KSHV-infected cells. Furthermore, angelicin shows potential in preventing inflammatory diseases by inhibiting the NF-κB and MAPK pathways.
