Recently, Zhongnongzhongyuan (Shenzhen) Technology Co., Ltd., a synthetic biology animal design and breeding company affiliated with the Shenzhen Agricultural Genomics Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, announced receiving tens of millions of dollars in investment. Following this funding round, the company will continue to invest in research and development to expand its gene editing breeding technology and create excellent original breeding materials.
The Zhongnongzhongyuan team is dedicated to the development of cutting-edge pig breeding technology and the creation of breeding materials. Currently, they have developed several gene-edited breeding materials, including those resistant to porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS), porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), high lean meat percentage, and resistance to three major diseases. Additionally, the company has developed three gene-edited pig disease model strains and obtained the Chinese Experimental Animal New Resource Certificate.
China currently consumes nearly 50 million tons of pork annually, accounting for nearly 50% of global pork consumption. China has the world's largest commercial pig farming industry, with a scale consistently above one trillion yuan in recent years. However, there is still a significant demand for importing efficient breeding pigs to sustain reproduction and a substantial need for high-quality and efficient upstream breeding pigs. Moreover, diseases such as PRRS and African swine fever, both of which are animal epidemic diseases, have a high positive detection rate for infectious gastroenteritis. These diseases cause incalculable losses to the pig farming industry each year. The anti-major-disease and efficient pig breeding materials created by Zhongnongzhongyuan are expected to have broad application prospects in this field.
The reproduction and cultivation of new pig breeds is a lengthy process that requires at least ten years of breeding. The Zhongnongzhongyuan team has nearly 30 years of scientific research experience in pig breeding. They utilize new breeding technologies such as design breeding, making use of high-quality cell resources as the foundation, to continuously cultivate high-quality pig genetic materials. They actively seek cooperation and layout with downstream industries. Furthermore, based on approved specialized strains of experimental animals, they provide high-quality test subjects for life science research.
