Chinese synthetic biology startup PhaBuilder recently announced the completion of A round of financing of RMB 250 million. After the completion of this round of financing, PhaBuilder successfully completed the angel round and round A financing within less than one year of its establishment, with total financing of nearly 300 million yuan.
After the completion of round A financing, PhaBuilder will fully build a new generation of biodegradable material PHA international R&D headquarters in Shunyi District, Beijing, complete the construction of 1000 tons/year intelligent demonstration line, and start designing intelligent manufacturing base with an annual output of 10000 tons/year of PHA and high-value compounds at the same time.
PhaBuilder is an innovative synthetic biology startup established by the transformation of scientific and technological achievements of Tsinghua University. Based on nearly 30 patented technologies developed by Professor George Guo-Qiang CHEN, the director of the Center for Synthetic & Systems Biology of Tsinghua University, the company has built a disruptive "Next Generation Industrial Biotechnology (NGIB)" platform. This innovative platform realizes non-sterile and continuous fermentation in the production process and reduces the production cost by more than 30%. The company has launched its first product - biodegradable material Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). This new material can be used not only in medical scenarios such as medical microspheres, 3D-printed bone nails, and surgical sutures but also as raw materials to manufacture biodegradable plastic products such as packaging bags, agricultural films, and disposable tableware, so as to provide green solutions for carbon neutral.
